On the unexpected success of certain films

ABSTRACT

Some low-budget films achieve box office returns of twenty or thirty times their production costs. It is true that this figure, in recent years, is heavily shaped by social media engagement and the promotional mechanisms that drive success — dynamics through which strategic marketing can contribute more than the film's own intrinsic qualities: that alchemy of themes, storytelling and suspense that allows a film to travel nationally, and in certain cases internationally. This post sets out to explore precisely those mechanisms. Without venturing into statistical or analytical models, I try to identify some of the properties that pre-market strategies have been able to foster, alongside others that reside within the film's internal workings — originality, an instinct for contemporaneity, narrative fluency, and the occasional plot twist — which generated interest after the fact, rather than before it, among distributors and promotional campaigns.
