Forecast

Quantitative tools for the Italian film industry. Predictive models for box office estimation and distribution strategy — built at the intersection of mathematical modelling and production experience.

A scoring tool to evaluate which country and genre to invest in, across two production categories: films shot in Italy and co-productions distributed abroad.

The tool compares around 15 countries across two scenarios. In the first, an Italian film shot in Italy seeks distribution in foreign cinemas — the model evaluates how receptive each market is to Italian productions. In the second, the film is co-produced with a local partner in the target country — the model adds criteria specific to that investment: local production costs, access to public funds, availability of cast and crew on the ground. Concrete questions the tool answers: Is Spain a viable market for an Italian arthouse film, or does the language barrier limit its reach? Does South Korea offer co-production conditions that justify the distance for a sci-fi project? Between France and Belgium — similar markets on paper — which one scores better for a creative documentary? The model scores each country on: local audience demand, distribution access, cultural affinity with Italy, and screen concentration in major cities. A genre filter adjusts the scores based on each genre's specific reception patterns in that country — covering horror, thriller, comedy, sci-fi, action, arthouse drama, creative documentary, and musical. Criteria weights are user-adjustable. Every estimate comes with confidence indicators and country-level qualitative notes.

Movie Revenue Estimation ECONOMETRIC · BOX OFFICE

Econometric forecasting of Italian box office — from pre-acquisition to in-run projection.

The system estimates Italian box office performance of foreign and domestic films, combining OLS regression on pre-release signals (director consistency, festival pedigree, budget, critic scores) with a Bayesian lifecycle model of theatrical decay curves. Designed as a practical acquisition tool for independent Italian distributors and sales agents, it outputs a predicted gross range with 80% confidence interval and a breakeven probability for any film at negotiation time. The model covers five distinct scenarios. Scenario 1: model diagnostics — verifies the regression behaves sensibly on the training dataset before any decision is made. Scenario 2: foreign film still in production, with no reviews or opening data yet — answers the question 'should I acquire Italian distribution rights?'. Scenario 3: foreign film already released in its home market, with Rotten Tomatoes scores and opening weekend data — the confidence interval narrows significantly, because home-market opening is the strongest single predictor. Scenario 4: Italian film — theatrical versus platform comparison, with flags for RAI/Mediaset co-productions and rights already assigned to RAI Play, Prime or Netflix IT. Scenario 5: in-run monitoring — the decay curve is updated week by week with actual Italian box office data, refining the total gross projection as the theatrical run progresses.
